My goal is for this sketch book to be fluid and organic in nature rather than following a strict, linear progression of my work. Currently I am working on a series which focuses on women’s issues. Through the expression of painting and drawing, compositions frame aspects of being a modern female that I find compelling.

Follow my progress as I work in my studio. And any thoughts, ponders or musings from followers are always welcome!

Life is short.
Anyone else struggle with this? Recognizing that my best work happens when I act unconsciously, I am trying to put aside or temporarily “forget” all the academic training while in studio. I have also been reading Why Art Cannot be Taught by James Elkins, finding the in-depth history of art instruction helpful in understanding the different approaches to teaching art and how it has changed throughout history relative to art movements. (Also good therapy for resolving whatever frustrations I carry with me from art school days!)

One hour pose.
Today I set out to start a painting of an old citrus juicer that belonged to my grandmother. The design has always intrigued me, in fact, it has intimidated me. This is a strong, no-nonsense, utensil. No trendy design here, just brute, industrial strength. I’ve tried to get rid of it, but quite honestly, I’m scared to. So, in an attempt to overcome any irrational, psychological issues I have with this tool, I am going to complete some studies from various angles from which some finished pieces will be added to my current work.

I have taken some steps in the still life set-up to maintain consistency. The top left photo shows how I marked the position of my easel with tape on the floor. When the easel is moved while working, I’ll know where to roll it back.

While working on the initial drawing, I sometimes use a view-finder pictured on the top right. It can be adjusted to match the proportions of the canvas, panel or paper. I’ve made my own as well from mat board.

The bottom left photo shows the juicer in position with some pieces of black tape I place for visual reference when looking through the view-finder. It’s difficult to hold the view-finder in exactly the same place repeatedly, so the tape marks the spot, aligning with the top middle and the bottom middle.

The bottom right photo is a shot looking through the view-finder’s window. This is the first composition I will work with.

Tedious? Maybe. Worth it for consistency? You bet!

Here’s to more good work to be done in 2013. This is the second still life of rocks brought back from my travels to Cyprus.
